Nature Repair Market (statutory)

Nature Repair Market (statutory) is a biodiversity method run by Australia Nature Repair Market. People often refer to it by its code, AU NRM. It works in the compliance (au) space.

In short

Australia's legislated market issuing tradable biodiversity certificates for registered nature-repair projects.

What it is

The Nature Repair Market is a national voluntary scheme established under the Nature Repair Act 2023 that issues tradeable biodiversity certificates for projects that protect, manage, or restore native species and ecosystems in Australia. Projects must follow an approved method, and the first method covers replanting native forest and woodland ecosystems on cleared or degraded land to restore local native vegetation and ecological connectivity. A biodiversity certificate records the biodiversity outcomes of a registered project over its permanence period, and each certificate is unique to the project that generated it.

What it rewards

The reward is a credit called a Biodiversity Certificate (AUBC). One credit stands for one project certificate. A verified, nature-positive biodiversity outcome. A whole period of work is issued as one batch of credits at a time, in the same way a registry issues a batch.

What gets measured

To earn AUBC credits, a project has to measure and prove a few things. An independent reviewer checks the evidence before any credits are issued.

  • Native replanting species & establishment. First method replants native forest/woodland to restore local vegetation.

  • Seedling survival & growth. Restoration outcome is tracked via survival and growth.

  • Vegetation cover & connectivity. Method targets vegetation cover and ecological connectivity.

  • Monitoring over permanence period. Certificate records outcomes across the permanence period.

Who takes part

  • Standard Registry. Owns the policy, approves participants, anchors each issuance to its evidence.

  • Project Proponent. Registers the project and submits monitoring reports.

  • Validation & Verification Body. Independently validates the design and verifies monitored data.

How it works

  1. 1

The project team registers the project and its plan.

  2. 2

An independent reviewer checks that the plan is sound and that the benefit is real and would not have happened anyway.

  3. 3

The team looks after the site and measures the agreed indicators over time.

  4. 4

The independent reviewer verifies those measurements.

  5. 5

Credits are issued for the verified result, and a buyer can retire a credit to claim the benefit once.
